Mantra Monsta’s debut full length wrong house: sounds much like its front cover looks: darkness descending from the sky. Though a stark stylistic contrast to his earlier work The B.S. EP, this release is no less experimental and interesting. The first track It’s like is a thirty second suspense-builder. Complete with clinking and screeching, it leads you, like the first climb of a rollercoaster, into the inevitable chaos to ensue. Unfortunately after that the rollercoaster similarities end, as most of the tracks feature a similar dizzying fuzz sound layered over other half-coherent noises. But there’s gold to be found buried in these tracks. The pulsing and convulsing of Moving feel like robot death in a blender to a hypnotic pseudo-rhythm. And I’m Happening has got to be the exact sound of meeting Satan’s unpleasant laughter upon arrival in Hell. The relative calm of Let me Collect My Thoughts ends up being a palate-cleanser before final track Glorious! rears up on its hind legs to scream right in your face. All in all I think Mantra Monsta intends to push the boundaries of what can be considered a “song”. Some would call it a test of endurance. Some would call it art.
